I know there is a lot going on in the world currently. As Belarusian – American, I want to bring as much as possible light and actions to the events in my homeland country Belarus.
Belarus has been under the authoritarian rule of Alexander Lukashenko since 1994. Belarus does not have free and fair elections and has been sanctioned for human rights violations by the United States and the European Union. Minorities, journalists, and those who oppose the regime are prosecuted.
I was born and raised in Minsk, Belarus and I have been living in New York, the US for the past 21 years and I know the power of democracy and I think till all countries all over the world have democracy, we all do not have democracy. Democracy is simply a human right that all of the people should have.
Dictatorship thrives in the dark – bring as much attention to what is happening as possible. We must magnify the voices of the Belarusian people as loudly as we can.
